Artist Statement

As an artist, I am fascinated by surrealism and the interplay of linework, form, and color to express a rejection of the rational mind or of social constraints.

My collection, “Form over Experience,” features amorphous, bending shapes protruding from and surrounding feminine figures—both of which are given depth and movement with overlayed lines and colorful gradients. My choice of vibrant colors and overlapping shapes is a rejection of limiting norms, self-imposed and societal. With one layer, I unravel my affinity for surrealism and confront my preconceived notions around artistic expression and what it means to define myself as an artist. With another layer, I reflect on norms and beliefs around womanhood and femininity that silently and violently suppress the subconscious and muffle creativity and authentic self-expression. With the blending of linework, shape, and gradients, I invite viewers to become mesmerized by another world, dreams, where reality bends enough to spark wonder and provoke an abandon. The effect is just as dizzying as it is mesmerizing. The difficulty to spot the woman and gauge whether she is coming together or coming apart illustrates the struggle to embody every desire and dream and a sense of overwhelm.

In a world that attaches limits to women’s muliebrity, we have found ways to evolve and maintain presence as time passes—sometime finding new purpose or meaning. The gradual desaturation of these images unveil the stable truth of form. Color fades, but fragility and vulnerability is filled with transformative meaning. And even when there is little pigment left, the shapes will still be distinguishable. I call this the triumph of form over experience.
